I touch people in my current work environment and get the very occasional hug. As a single and abstinate woman with a handicapped, non-touching child at home I see a massage therapist bi-weekly. Hugs of a non-sexual nature would be nice in between–and would be most welcomed. I have been involved in large group settings where boundaries were pushed and rules placed for appropriate, therapeutic touch and it was an awesome (literally God-inspiring) feeling.

As a massage therapist and now acupuncturist, I know that touch is really important. My suggestion is to get a bunch of open minded seniors in a room together for a great big cuddle pary. A much nicer image than sitting around in a wheelchair in a nursing home, isolated and alone. I think pet therapy is a type of cuddle party.

i somehow feel that people feel lonely and cuddlying is just a quick fix that takes them nowhere. Real cuddlying is of the soul and not for the body. Antything else is cheap thrills!!!!!!

Wow-not sure what to think. It SOUNDS like a good idea but somehow also seems JUST a little weird. I wasn’t able to read the article either but will investigate the topic further.I would think this type of limited physical contact would be frustrating for you boys…;-)

How fascinating! The advent of cuddle parties makes total sense given our childrearing practices in the West. Imagine: for nine months you are enveloped in the warmth and safety of your mother’s womb and then at birth you are (most commonly) extracted from her with a cold metal instrument and placed in isolation instead of on her chest. The nourishment offered you is a formulaic substance served from an artificial teat. You spent much of your days lying on your back in a wooden cage or propped up in a seat. For sure, we need Mommy’s arms and Daddy’s chest. There is simply no comparison. No wonder we crave physical contact from our peers. When we heal our birthing and infant caregiving practices, we will indeed see a major shift in the next generation. Thank you for sharing this, David…
