join me in 3 months meditation

After 38 years I’ve decided to meditate.

10 minutes a day, for 3 months.

To see what happens.

To see what I gain. And what I lose.

My aim is to learn to enjoy nothing happening. To see what’s beneath all the bustle.

What’s your aim?

If you’ve ever thought of meditating, or just feel called to try something new - then join me.

We can support each other in this practice, and share our experiences along the way.

HOW TO JOIN
a) Declare it in the comments section below or use this quick link:

http://www.solutionbox.com/meditate

(Save this link)

b) Send a blank email to david38-195055@autocontactor.com so you’ll
get any relevant emails from me during the 3 months.

GUIDANCE

1) We started Monday Sep 11 2006, finishing Dec 11, 2006

2) Start today, whenever you have come.

3) I’m aiming for 20 minutes each morning, but with a minimum of 10. 10 is fine.

4) Put a calendar plainly visible on a wall. (I printed off September to December from Outlook). Tick off each day as you do it.

5) If you miss a day, make it up with two meditations the next day.

6) Post your commitment here on the blog, and share your experiences along the way.
[SAVE THIS LINK so you can come back regularly: www.solutionbox.com/meditate]

7) If you like, invite your friends to also join you and declare. It will be more fun, and you’ll have a greater support structure to see it through. Send them to www.solutionbox.com/meditate

Finally, here are the words that inspired me to start:

“Nothing should happen in meditation. Meditation teaches you to value what is! And not to desire what is not. It points you to Here and now, silence, peace and innocence (nature), towards life it self.

Start more and more enjoying the quiet and nothing happening!

Sit in meditation, for 10 or 20 minutes everyday. A good time is in the morning just before you get up: Sit up in the bed or in a chair for 10 or 20 minute in meditation. Close the eyes and do nothing, just allow the mind, the thoughts to be somewhere in the passive snoring there for a little while longer. And enjoy nothing happening!”

What are you waiting for? I’ve already started - 10 minutes this morning.

See you in nothing ;-)

David

Okay. It’s something that I’ve often thought about. It’s amazing how I never have 10 minutes to spare in a 24 hour day. I’m committed.

  3. Anonymous Says:

I already do a sound meditation for an hour every day. It does make a difference.

  4. Mark Farmer Says:

I’m happy to join you in this David, and will in fact invite the 2300 members of my Web site http://TotalLifeSuccess.com to join us.

You hit the nail on the head for me David, as I’ve been thinking about resuming my habit of meditation for some time. It’s always more fun doing something as a group so this will be a great support.

    Great idea!

I already chant for at least 30 minutes a day. I chant Nam myoho renge kyo. It is my way of aligning myself with the universal life force. It does work. Clarity, wisdom and an alignment to the mystic law of the universe means you are in the right place at the right time.

I’m with you. I can’t wait to see the results.

I am a meditator from way back but as No One is really alone I am delighted to add 10 minutes to it and join you, David, and the others.

I’ve taken up Bikram Yoga a moving meditation. But the challenge of completely emptying the mind is what I am ready to take on. I have 50 years of chattering to eradicate!!
Thanks for the invite to join David.

A little bit of advice - if you feel your mind start to wonder off - focus on feeling your body from the inside. You may have to refocus many times - don’t judge it just keep putting your focus back in your body

  29. Catherine Jewell Says:

Hi. I’ve meditated off (mostly off) and on for 35 years. I find these things helpful:

    1. Set a timer. Then, if you doze off, you’ll still be on time for work.
    2. Focus on a nonsense syllable. I was given a “mantra” which is two syllables and two notes. Saying that faster and faster puts me in deep meditation. It also blocks out the “mind chatter.”
    3. When your mind is chattering, be gentle with yourself. Just go back to your mantra. Treat your mind (ego) like the little child that it is.
    4. If you are extra tired, meditation can actually be a good substitute for sleep. I take a 20 minute meditation if I have only slept 5 hours or less.
    5. Choose a position that is comfortable and block out this time just for you. Delightful!

  35. Leslie Says:

This will kick start me into doing what I have been advised to do for ages. To slow my mind down, to quiet it. I start by just concentrating on my breath, inhale, hold for 5 seconds, exhale, hold for 5 seconds…good place to start.

  36. Anonymous Says:

Count me in. 10 minutes out of a whole 24 hrs a day is miniscule and achievable.

  37. sharmv Says:

    sure! can’t wait.

  38. Delene Says:

thanks David for the impetus. I haven’t been meditating consistantly and this will help me recommit… a little
“nothingness” willl be awesome, especially with the new direction my life is taking(grad school).
all the talk about chanting seems like a good addition too. Will pull out my chanting cds and add them to my time.
    blessings all…

  39. Robert Bohen Says:

How about we meditate in the context that all who are meditating here declare in the beginning of each mediation that is to the prosperity to ourselves (the meditator) and all who are meditating with us on this blog. And on December 11th see if we as a whole experience greater prosperity during this period? Wouldn’t that be an interesting experiment on the collective consciousness? I will start today declaring additional prosperity for all of you and myself. Robert Bohen

  40. HMBT Says:

I have been meditaing for years, I can join you for sure, I do it everyday, (7 days a week, unless I saved a life that day, I give myself 30 minutes of metime :) so I guess that means I was with you in spirit already.
In my understanding, meditaion isn’t about becoming nothing, it’s resisting the urge to run away from everything that comes up in the act of standing still (or sitting, whatever works for you) while still moving forward, from the inside…out. I practice letting my thoughts run, letting the chatter come up, letting the worry come up, letting all the human ego come up, and sit still with it…let it rise so that I can choose to interact with my NOW, by resisting the urge to stop, and do somethingelse, because it’s not always comfortable to let it go, let it run wild in the brain pan… I think of it as my moment of silence, letting go of my human need for resistence to the eternal flow of truth and reality.

So I don’t try to stop the chatter that is what we do in daily life, avoid the chatter of the world, what I do is relax INTO the stress, lean into what is, so that I may become what I need/want to be for the day. Yes, it’s very much like hitting the reset button on the old human computer…I’m in!
Here’s to a nothingness that is all encompassing!

To get to a more centered and less mindshatter place in the Now, just listen to your heartbeat… Feel how it beats in your chest. Then move to your head with your attention and take your time to be aware of your heartbeat. Then move on to your stomach. Keep getting more and more aware of your heartbeat all over your body. Be one with your heart and notice that your not alone and you are a connected living being. All is one. Equal in the silence.. No mindshatter around! I just love it!!

To master anything what is required is spaced repetition and immersion. Meditation is no exception, and I recommend to youself David and everyone else is a meditation retreat for total immersion. The most enjoyable one I went on was a ten day vipassana retreat in Thailand, were I clocked up over 100 hours of meditation in 10 days, with a strict code of silence. leaps and bounds can be made in these 10 days and it is the cheapest holiday you will ever go on!
two tips from me is concentrate on the breath and dont even try and stop the chatter of the mind as that will drive you crazy!
Just dissacociate yourself from the thoughts and become a silent witness to them. beyourpotential.biz

I’ve meditated for most of my life. As a matter of fact I introduced my kids to it to help them through their teenage years (my youngest is 13 and has started regular meditation this year). In those angst-riddled teen years centering is very important I think. Seems to eliviate some of the stresses our kids go through and interestingly enough it has been a great conversation starter. After meditation my boys are able (and more willing) to discuss some of the issues they’re struggling with.

Anyway, meditation is something I bring to my coaching practice when I work with parents and teens. Has been a great success for my clients over the last 15 years :)

Thanks Mark and Mary - great to have more people to play with.

    MIND CHATTER
Great questions Dawn-Marie…I like Akasha’s suggestion of feeling the body on the inside. Also I believe that’s why many focus on breath.
And I recommend everyone read hmbt’s post above. In fact I’ll repost a slice here:
“In my understanding, meditation isn’t about becoming nothing, it’s resisting the urge to run away from everything that comes up in the act of standing still (or sitting, whatever works for you) while still moving forward, from the inside…out. I practice letting my thoughts run, letting the chatter come up, letting the worry come up, letting all the human ego come up, and sit still with it…let it rise so that I can choose to interact with my NOW, by resisting the urge to stop, and do somethingelse, because it’s not always comfortable to let it go, let it run wild in the brain pan… I think of it as my moment of silence, letting go of my human need for resistence to the eternal flow of truth and reality.”

    SANDRA
    That’s funny ;-)

    VIPASSANA
Good tip Matthew - perhaps I’m working up to doing Vipassana. Developing my training wheels ;-)

    COMMUNITY
I LOVE knowing there will be a couple of hundred people joining in this each day. I think you’ll all smile when you hear my impulse to invite you all to join arose during my first 10 minutes of meditation this morning ;-) See what happens?

    MARYGM
    I feel you.

    RESULTS
Thanks for sharing Sheila - that’s fun to hear experiences already - you’re the first!

    THE BIBLE
Someone wrote: “The bible gives me God’s word. To clear the mind is to open oneself to the wrong spiritual forces”. Boy, that’s waiving a red flag at a bull. I feel drawn to open myself to what ‘is’. Whatever that means ;-) Hopefully not my already existing idea of what is or what is good.

    IF YOU’RE BEHIND…
There is no behind. You start when you start. Whether it’s September 11 or December 10. Join our journey into nothing, and into everything (did I mention I write fortune cookies for a living?)

    Hi guys,

Here’s a pic of my support structure on my notice board….so I can tick off each day.

    Notice board pic

Note the one big tick! October, November and December are pinned right behind September.

My intention is actually to meditate upon waking and before sleeping - so there is room for two ticks. But my commitment/promise is once a day, the rest is bonus.

  122. Brian Fradet Says:

David–I’ve been meditating for 32 years (since I was 21, now am 53) and the quality of life is such that I never understood why everyone doesn’t just do it. My only advise is that one should learn a particular method that has regularity, otherwise people won’t just do it because of your kind suggestion. Meditation is very, very powerful if folks would only do it. Thanks for being so right on target. Brian Fradet

  123. Anonymous Says:

I used to meditate. I loved it and it made a huge difference in my attitude toward the day as well as specific events. The nothing helped me realize that not getting what you want may be the best thing you ever get. I’m thrilled to renew my committment - I’m in.

  124. Sonorah Says:

    What a WONDERFUL IDEA
I have been meditating, my space is in the morning and evening shower. People tend to leave me alone in the shower. THis really works. Thanks for the group work.

    Hi David,

Being Christian, I know you’ll be ok with the fact that I don’t subscribe to Eastern Religions. I just have no reason to give up on my best friend Jesus. I must use my 20 minutes in prayer. I enjoy time with my Lord and it’s the least I can do for Him since he gave His life for me.

  148. patrick Says:

Thanks to one of your email links, David, I am already meditating for an hour a day. Good luck.

  149. Simon Lau Says:

    Hi David

I have sometimes use meditation to help me get into sleep but have not try out the type you suggested. I am glad to join in you group for 3 months and I will spend at least 10 minutes everyday on it. I have just reached 52 last month and I am staying healthy for the pass one year by drinking about 1.2 litres of water every morning(at least 1 hour breakfast). My aim is to continue staying as healthy as I am now.

    Thanks for inviting me.

  163. Carmon Says:

I recall as a child, my mother meditating in the morning & doing her exercises or yoga. We would all wake up & watch, or do it with her.
She taught us all how to respect ourselves & others & treasure the bodies we have. To a degree we have all maintained that, whenever we slip, we call upon what we have learnt & practise again.
I have found over the last few years people with all forms of meditation, but thay all have the same affect, to be at peace/or centred with oneself.
It is great that you are all doing it. The benefits, no matter how great or small, are benfeits. Some notice right away, others take sometime, so just enjoy the journey.
    See you all there!
    Cheers!

  170. Coach ReNina Says:

I have been meditating on and off for 8 years. Nothing special just breathing, being still and quieting the mind. In the past, when life got hectic, I would stop. Well I always go back to it because it centers me and I feel like I can handle anything in my day. My life is always more peaceful and seems to flow when I am doing it consistently. I started back every morning 20-30 minutes in January 2006. It has made a huge difference. I even suggest it to clients.

  171. gerry Says:

Just started doing this one month ago.
Amazing results in stress reduction and clarity of life purpose.

  179. George Ellerbeck Says:

This is something most of us think about but realy set ourselves a target. To know that the meditation is being done within a “silent” community is a challenge to pull the greater energy together for all to gain from. Lets keep it going, not only for now but after Dec 11.
