What method did you find most effective in getting your initial clients?
I had some ideas about the universal law of attraction from my depth psychology and world religions work and from Thomas Leonard’s book, The Portable Coach. But, as indicated, I knew of no coaches, workbooks or resources that could guide me… step by step, to use the law to market my business.
It took over a year and a half to create The Authentic Marketer, but we were highly motivated and dedicated to see it to completion. The process of writing it accelerated our proficiencies in the area of attraction. The step-by-step workbook is about who we are beyond name and personality, and how to share it with grace and ease. It focuses on the universal laws that govern our whole world not just how many paying clients we have. When I changed my definition of success from “how many paying clients I have” to “how powerfully I help others express their Whole Self”, I became extremely successful on my own terms.

What words of advice would you give to a coach starting out?
Coaching is more than a calling and more than a business. It transcends both because it’s about evolution. You are setting out to become a mentor for those who are ready and willing to evolve. Don’t take it lightly. It’s not as easy as it looks. And the rewards are more abundant than they appear.
Be prepared to dedicate your life to discovering, living and teaching others who you really are and who you really aren’t. Plan to learn and relish all kinds of truths about the underlying dynamics of people, situations and life. Plan to express yourself fully. The field of coaching is evolving fast: Plan to keep up.
Before you can help others evolve faster, you’ll need to immerse yourself in your own evolution. Don’t scrimp here. Find a good mentor. When you’ve given up all your attachments to how you thought you, life, others, coaching, and almost everything else is supposed to be, you’ll be ready for the noble role of Personal, Business and Professional Coach. And people will flock to you. Where are you now on that path?

What training, experience and qualifications did you have when you started coaching?
The most important qualifications to coach masterfully are self-awareness and advanced communicating skills. There are many ways to obtain them. I chose transpersonal/spiritual psychology training, world myth and religion and family life. I obtained a PhD in clinical psychology. I worked in mental hospitals, outward-bound programs, Jungian psychology training schools and private practice. I was an executive director of a non-profit educational institution, a wife and a mom. Life teaches self-awareness and communicating skills to the ready learner in all kinds of environments.

Approximately how long did it take you to generate US$30,000 pa in coaching revenue?
4.5 years…If I knew then what I know now, it would have taken half the time.
Over this period, on average how many days per week were dedicated to coaching?
Each year brought increasing responsibilities and opportunities. I worked on creating client programs when I wasn’t coaching and was available four days a week, three weeks a month.
But it wasn’t until I began teleclass teaching and working with SOC about 18 months ago, that I obtained high visibility and my practice really accelerated. Last month I cleared $5,000.00 US dollars and I worked 5-6 days a week. Passive revenue from client programs hasn’t kicked in yet and that’s what is needed to make more and work less.

What advice would you give coaches about charging clients?
Give some of it away knowing that what you give freely comes back tenfold. Give some of it away with the agreement that the client may receive benefit, but they are also giving themselves to the coach so the coach can practice their new skills. And for some, charge what people can afford to pay you, noticing who receives the most from you (your ideal client). Notice who you attract and what it takes to attract your ideal clients.
How did you deal with the coaching/charging friends issue?
After feeling disappointed a few times because of my own unrealistic expectations, I stopped going there! I cross-referred. My coach colleagues sent me their/family and I sent them mine. Always pro bono with the agreement that both coach and client were practicing on each other.
